Our client is looking for a Controller to join the Accounting and Finance Team, reporting directly to the CFO. The ideal candidate is based in Napa Valley, CA however they will consider candidates in the Bay Area. Position Overview
Seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to lead all financial operations for our fast-growing e-commerce wine business. This role oversees accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls, ensuring that the company maintains accurate financials and meets all regulatory obligations. The ideal candidate has deep experience in e-commerce, inventory-driven businesses, and the regulatory landscape of alcohol sales across the U.S.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
•  Oversee all day-to-day accounting functions, including AP, AR, payroll, month-end close, and general ledger management.

•  Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

•  Manage cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis.

•  Manage weekly/monthly dashboards and financial performance reports.

Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
•  Manage compliance resource(s) to ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local alcohol regulations, including licensing, tax reporting, and distribution rules.

•  Maintain accurate sales tax compliance across all states, including marketplace facilitator rules, nexus monitoring, and filing requirements.

•  Oversee wine industry–specific compliance such as direct-to-consumer (DTC) shipping regulations, age verification standards, and state-by-state shipment limits.

•  Partner with legal and external compliance vendors to keep licenses current and maintain audit-ready documentation.

Inventory & Cost Accounting
•  Lead inventory accounting across warehouses, 3PLs, and direct-fulfillment partners.

•  Oversee costing, margin analysis, SKU-level profitability, and inventory reconciliation.

•  Develop systems for tracking landed cost, spoilage/write-offs, and real-time inventory valuation.

Systems & Process Improvement
•  Optimize accounting systems, integrations, and tech stack workflows with e-commerce platforms (Shopify, NetSuite, homegrown systems).

•  Improve financial processes for scale, including automation, internal controls, and data accuracy.

Leadership & Cross-Functional Support
•  Manage and mentor accounting staff of five as well as external bookkeeping resources.

•  Work closely with Operations, Growth/Marketing, and Logistics teams to support strategic decision-making.

•  Serve as the financial partner in quarterly planning, fundraising support, and board reporting.

Qualifications
•  Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA strongly preferred.

•  5–10+ years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3 years in a controller or senior accounting leadership role.

•  Experience in e-commerce, DTC, retail, or inventory-focused businesses required; wine or alcohol industry experience strongly preferred.

•  Deep knowledge of GAAP and regulatory compliance (including multi-state tax and alcohol licensing).

•  Strong fluency with accounting systems (NetSuite and QuickBooks) and e-commerce integrations.

•  Exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and communication abilities.
