Job Description

Driscoll Children’s Hospital is seeking a full time Genetic Counselor position in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and growing division that includes a clinical geneticist, a genetics nurse, and a genetics medical assistant, and two dedicated medical office specialists, with a second clinical geneticist set to join the team this year. The role is pivotal in providing genetic counseling primarily for pediatric patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings, while also extending services to adult patients as needed. The Genetic Counselor will be responsible for reviewing, eliciting, and interpreting family, medical, and psychosocial histories to provide informed counseling. This includes coordinating the genetic testing process in collaboration with laboratories, physicians, and patients/families. Participation in departmental conferences, meetings, and teaching sessions for students and pediatric residents is also expected, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Driscoll Children’s Hospital is the focal point for pediatric services throughout South Texas, recognized as a world-class institution.

Responsibilities

  • Provide genetic counseling primarily for pediatric patients in outpatient and inpatient settings
  • Provide genetic counseling for adult patients as needed
  • Review, elicit, and interpret family, medical, and psychosocial histories
  • Obtain informed consent from patients and families
  • Coordinate the genetic testing process with laboratory, physicians, and patients/families
  • Work closely with geneticists, non-genetics physicians, nurses, dieticians, social workers, and other care members to coordinate patient care
  • Participate in departmental conferences, meetings, and student/resident teaching
  • Demonstrate effective communication, listening, organization, and independence; demonstrate successful case management skills
  • Demonstrate clinical knowledge and professional competency appropriate for the provision of care specific to age, development, culture, ethnicity, language, education, socioeconomic status and condition-specific needs of patients, while maintaining a consistent level of patient care
  • Document and maintain accurate case records with full, objective, succinct and appropriate medical record documentation; ensure confidentiality of information
  • Serve as a resource and effectively share clinical expertise with staff, referring providers and community

Requirements

  • Graduated from an ABGC accredited genetic counseling training program.
  • Board certified or board eligible with the American Board of Genetic Counselors.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of human genetic disorders and defects
  • Ability to apply counseling methods and techniques to help families to cope and manage potential outcomes
  • Strong computer skills and comfort with databases
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (written and oral).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Eagerness to work in a team setting.
  • Bilingual in Spanish (preferred but not required)

Minimum Education

  • Master’s degree in human genetics and counseling or a related field
  • Board-eligible or Board Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)

Experience

  • Experience as a clinical genetic counselor preferred but not required
